Visually Deaf and Loudly Seen!

35-year-old Liu Bolin, from Shandong, China, manages to camouflage himself in any surroundings, no matter how difficult they might be.

Liu works on a single photo for up to 10 hours at a time, to make sure he gets it just right, but he achieves the right effect: sometimes passers-by don’t even realize he is there until he moves.

The talented Liu Bolin says his art is a protest against the actions of the Government, who shut down his art studio in 2005 and persecutes artists. It’s about not fitting into modern society. Despite problems with Chinese authorities, Liu’s works are appreciated at an international level.

  1. His pictures and concept are very unique, but what is even more stimulating is his political motive! Knowing the rationale behind his artwork just blows me away, especially considering he is working on an alternative outlet after being previously silenced!

I wonder about his production team, this has to be hard work for just one person! I especially enjoy the graffiti and the roadblock photographs! But the bulldozer photograph has to be my favorite because it took me about a minute to find him!!!

These are great! Thanks for sharing Dimitri!

  2. @ Taj, I agree. This is a clever way to “challenge” the law. Because “he” is the art how can be breaking any laws? I think he may do this all himself. It reads that he spends almost up to 10 hours on each…if there were more people it would quicker…right?

  3. @ Dimitri- Not necessarily quicker. It says he spends the time to make sure it’s right. That could mean the costuming itself could take that long, not the photography (which could be quick, or he could do like America’s Next Top Model and take 10,000 frames and narrow it down to one). To make sure he is painted correctly into the background seems like it should take that long, even with a team! But who knows, more power to him if he stands alone!! And, I noticed in a few pics he has other models alongside him. He is definitely a talented mind!!!

  4. The only thing I have to say is … that is dope … lol! The power of art and expression. What a beautiful thing.
